edit 12:29pm:
I'm happy to report that my real blog is once again online. I don't know when it returned, nor why it was out. I'm just glad it's back.

Maybe it had something to do with "Monday the 13th"....

earlier today:

The webhost for my real blog on etherwork.net is offline AGAIN. I have no idea how long it has been offline, nor when it will return.

As always, the way to know whether etherwork is back online is to refresh this page. If you see a leafy image at the top of the page, then you can access the real blog.

Today is World Food Day

World Food Day (WFD) - 16 October 2011

World Food Day - 16 October World Food Day is an annual event put together by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to raise funds to feed the world's chronically hungry.
[T]here have never been so many hungry people in the world.

- Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2010

World Food Day is on October 16 to remind us that every day there are empty bowls and critically hungry people world wide.

Let's make every day World Food Day.

World Food Day: Fill the Cup
fill the cup
Acute hunger or starvation are often highlighted on TV screens [...] These situations are the result of high profile crises like war or natural disasters, which starve a population of food, yet emergencies account for less than eight percent of hunger's victims. [...] Daily undernourishment is a less visible form of hunger - but it affects many more people [...] By 2001-2003, the total number of undernourished people worldwide had risen to 854 million and the latest figure is 925 million.

WFP: Hunger Map 2011 Today, almost one person in six does not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life, making hunger and malnutrition the number one risk to health worldwide - greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

- UN World Food Program, Hunger FAQs

WFP Hunger Map 2011 Undernourished: Blue <5%; Yellow 5-9%; Orange 10-19%; Red 20-34% Maroon; >35%; Grey incomplete data (source: FAO: The State of Food Insecurity in the World)

Please note that there are impoverished and hungry people everywhere in the world. And while there are many of us more fortunate who might want pretend that nobody is hungry, happily there are also many who are not ignoring them but working hard to feed these people. Here are just a few possibilities of viable organizations. Please look in your community for others:

Remember when giving your donations to ensure that the relief agency you have chosen already has operations set up in the area. Also, it's a good idea to ask their advice about whether it is best to specify "greatest need" on your donation. They know best where the moneys really need to go.

And don't forget about these sites online.

plagued with internal error messages and slooooooooow loading

At first I thought it was just my computer that was at fault. I've been running virus scans, clearing caches, rebooting, etc. etc. to try to fix things.

And now, my real blog appears to be plagued with internal error messages and slooooooooow loading. Rats. No doubt this will be fixed as soon as it's not the middle of the night.
